Wateen’s Triple Play and Wimax launched in DHA Lahore on limited testing basis
Wateen is apparently launching a limited public “beta test” of their triple-play and WiMax services.
From what I gather from their website and TV tickers, here are the details.
- Voice and Video Calls
- 2 Mbps uncapped internet
- Digital TV with Pay-per-view movies
- Price Point — last I heard it was around Rs.500/mo.
The CPE details are vague, but Wateen is using Fibre-to-the-curb in DHA and a Motorola Canopy WiMax equipment, so I’d say it is going to be cheaper than the Rs.30k Fibre Router provided by Nayatel.
Interesting, but no time for analysis yet — one of my draft stories was going to talk about this before it launched, but well it has.
If anyone gets the chance to test out this service, give me a comment — I believe Qazi (one of the readers) lives there?

I would love to read your thoughts about this service as I am planning to use wateen’s services in future dpending upon the cost and realiablity.

well the initial details are. that it is only available in Z block (I am in Q block so i will have to wait).
1. Equipment will be provided by Wateen free of cost on a contract for some duration(that was unknown to the person i talked)
2. Security deposit of 500 will be required.
probably in few days i will be able to get the brochure which has the package details. if some one is in Z block he can tell us about the service.

500/month is cheaper than I thought it would be.

ok today i got a chance to visit their office after all. seems they are still in their final deployment and testing phases. at the moment they are giving services over cable (not Wimax ) in Phase IV, on free trial basis and that too if you request. proper launch is planed next month. and till now now information on tariff is decided. so another month to wait. the person i talked to earlier seems to have not much info (i dialed their help line)
keep your fingers crossed

once it lands in karachi, i am getting it. i don’t even care about the costs as much as I would like to have a decent net connection for once.
April 23, 2007 at 6:27 am
well they have not showed up with the promised free connection :) lets see if they improve their customer relation ship after the launch.
some thing which i might add here is that they had actually dug up whole of the DHA Lahore for installation of their cables. and have a lot of irritated customers. so if they don’t come up with some thing magically good to justify all their digging and if their services and rates are comparable to what world call is giving (999 Rs basic package) then Wateen has a hard time ahead.

when is wateen going to launch their service in Allama Iqbal Town
August 16, 2007 at 4:01 pm
I had one of the trial deployments at my office. The equipment is still there but they’re probably upgrading back-end equipment (APs, etc.)
It’s great when working but since it’s a trial, they do shut it down or try different settings at times blocking certain sites.
Drop into my office if you wanna try. I’ve terminated it to my WiFi router so bring your notebook with wireless connectivity option. Will update as soon as Wateen resumes trial service.

I need the complete installation detail of wimax ???
September 26, 2007 at 2:38 pm
Well its not tough….half an hour activity and you will have it installed. But you need some wateen guy if you are using their service as the service they are providing is not even in their own control. At back end they have the Motorola for which it is the first ever deployment in Pakistan…..:) so nothing reliable yet….the service was supposed to be launched in June 2007. You better guess yourself…..

Well, Wateen is going to shake PTCL :)
October 21, 2007 at 10:49 am
wateen cant shake PTCL, ptcl is earning money from their network and now it is a private company. if someone of u heard about ptcl 1mb connection. everybody is giving at about 20k or more but ptcl is giving at 5k and its 3500 for university students. come with 3 month unlimited download and after that 8 gb. its not a bad offer. if wateen will come and give connection on cheaper rates than this, i bet ptcl will come up real cheap rates. but thats what i am waiting for. here is our benifit. they will fight and we will get cheap internet. but until now cheap and fast dsl is just a dream. i am on a 1mb shared connection, its fast and cost me only 500 as 10 people sharing it, but i want more, i am computer professional, and who didnot? everybody want to use utube and services like that. lets hope for the best

Hi, I have Ptcl’s 512kbps and 1mbps connections inn use and I found both of them reliable and very cheap. Specially 1mbps connection is the cheapest u can get at this speed with unlimited bandwidth. http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=Zeeair2

Assalam-o-Alaikum First of all i congratulates to you for launching this amazing network. I was thinking that there should be some thing other than PTCL because without this the perfect competition can not happen. Now i hope that the public of pakistan will get very much advantage and will support wateen
November 28, 2007 at 11:39 am
yar in bainchodo nay wimax k modem ki price Rs.22500 rakhi hai ,yani k ye service home users key liye nhi hai,iss say achi to PTCL ka DSL hi hai,inn ko 22500 btanay say pehlay kuch sharm kerni chaye thee.ulu k pathay.may b service achi ho mager itna expensive lena asaan nhi.

Salam Everyone !!!!!!!!!
i am from peshawar. wimax service is launched here and i went to their office to clarrify the package 1 and package 2
i think package 1 was good
because
in it the installation is free, modem , cpe
and also u r given a choice to pay the bill in monthly cheques or at one time which is 17999/- full but in cheques 1350/- for each month but at the start u have to pay 3,000 which is included in 1799
but the cheques are to be signed and given on that time, meaning u r bound to pay for 1 year.
but here’s the benefit ur download speed is reasonable 512 kbps and also no monthly deposits again and u will have unlimited downloads.
i think its really goood

meray khayal se wateen ko lead layjani chayay ptcl se aghar woh best package offer kartay hai
